What does a friendship band mean?
It's a type of love language, Gift giving, which means we are connected to the act of giving or receiving gifts.
Working with children made me remember how when we were kids, we used to plan the whole week, whom to give which color of band, whom Not to give and we would save from our pocket money and go by ourselves to the shops to buy those friendship bands and rings and what not!
Significance
Giving something with so much thought is a token of gratitude which means, "I see you, I see who you are as a person, and the thought of you is present with me even when you're not around, and here is a physical symbol of your presence in my life and how I see you so that you will know every time you see this that you are seen and considered and loved."
Why have we stopped celebrating friendship day?
someone answers:
"when you are a kid/teenager - it is a big day and end up celebrating till the end of the day
If you are in your twenties - you send messages or forward messages and mails on WhatsApp or email.
If you are beyond 35 - you probably read about it in the newspaper and move to the next news."
but no matter what age we are at when we hear the word "friendship", we quickly get this image of the moments with the 'ones' we have had the best/ worst of our times. Some we cherish, some we forgive.
So here it is to all the friends I have lost.
" I am happy I had found you, I am happy to have spent all the times we had, some made us come together some grew us apart. I respect both of our decisions, and though sometimes I wonder/rage about why we grew apart, I understand its need and have made peace with it. I forgive you and moreover, I forgive myself, allowing myself to grow beyond the rage. I wish you all the strength and hope you find all that you are looking for in this world."
And here it is to all the friends who I gained/who stayed
whether I saw them or not, " I love you very much, I don't say it often, but thank you for being a family to me. Thank you for choosing me when you had a billion reasons not to, thank you for listening to me, from near and far. I see you, I see the efforts you put in, they give me so much strength and help me believe in myself. Thank you for calling me out on my mistakes yet standing with me even when I wished to do them, because either its 'not happening or happening together'. I will forever cherish the moments we cried and laughed together till we lost our breaths. You are the light to my life, I hope you find everything that you are looking for."
Friendship isn't just for a one-day celebration, but why waste even a day to not celebrate it when it's all that we've got?
I hope you call/visit a friend today, and every once in a while to let them know that you see them, they are loved and hugged.
